Jail is a General Codex entry in Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Jails are locations where criminals are kept after committing crimes.

In medieval times, most common criminals were not locked away for long periods, as they would require food and shelter without being able to work - not feasible in an era where a bad harvest could doom an entire village, and everyone needed to pull their weight. Instead, they would be executed for major crimes, or put in the pillory for minor ones.

Wealthy or powerful people such as Divish of Talmberg could be held hostage and often housed quite well, as paying to keep them alive was well worth the money made through ransom, control of their lands, or just to keep them from interfering in your business. In addition, murdering a lord that was in your custody would have been an egregious offense and likely to bring the wrath of other lords and the king on you, as well as the condemnation of the Pope.

Medieval prions mostly consisted of castle dungeons. Later, different types of strongholds for internment of criminals came into being: municipal jails, located at the town hall, and separate prisons for debtors. Prisons held both men and women together; segregation was practically solely on the basis of social status and the severity of the crime. Prison was not intended to serve a remedial function, as nowadays, but rather as a temporary residence for the condemned before the punishment of another nature, because no one wanted to have to feed prisoners long-term.
