Walkthrough[]
Hans Capon tells you of his love for Karolina, the Rattay butcher's daughter, and describes her "virtues" with enthusiasm. He plans to court her in a way that's all the rage in France: by convincing her she has a secret admirer. You'll first have to help him by recovering his great-grandmother's necklace, which he lost in a dice game to a lucky player in Ledetchko. Recovering the necklace is achieved by completing the related quest Game of Throws.
When you return to Hans with the necklace, he'll give you 650
and a sealed love letter and direct you to stash the necklace and the letter in the chest in Karolina's room. After you've done so and waited until at least 06:00 the next day, he'll ask you to obtain a Musk of Infinite Allure, which is sold by a Charlatan who peddles worthless trinkets as holy relics. If you choose the "Alright, I'll get it." option, he'll also give you 425
for expenses. You can buy the recipe for the potion from the Charlatan for 2,000
(or 4,000
if you choose the "That's cheap!" option) or pickpocket it from him, but if you want to experience everything the DLC has to offer, you can instead get him to brew the potion for you by completing the related quest No Rest for the Wicked.
When you deliver the potion to Hans, he'll hand you another 650
and the book Anthology of Love Poems and tell you to study it while he prepares to call on Karolina. Meet him in his room in Pirkstein between 19:00 and 21:00, and you'll find something went wrong with the potion: his face is red and swollen, as if he'd slept with his head in a wasps' nest. You can advise that he wait until tomorrow for the rash to heal, or you can offer him a Marigold decoction as an immediate antidote. Alternatively, if you pass a Speech check to convince him he looks fine and then ensure his courtship succeeds, you will earn the achievement True Friend.
Leave Pirkstein and follow Hans to the church graveyard, next to the butcher's house. Hans commands you to hide in some bushes nearby and feed him lines of poetry. He calls out to Karolina, who appears in the second floor window. If you read the book, it will be obvious what you should recite for Hans for the "good" ending (though reading "Ode to Woman" results in a slightly funnier cutscene), but even if you feed him the correct lines, he'll botch them. Regardless, the following sequence based on the first poem in the book will ensure he succeeds:
- "Gentle night..."
- "And now my heart in sorrow dwells..."
- "Ah Lord, let me not wait in vain..."
- When Karolina notes Hans is reciting some... unique poetry, choose to blame the French.
If you chose the above options, Karolina will praise Hans for his poetry. Unfortunately, his recitation has drawn the attention of the butcher, who appears in the graveyard with two friends to defend his daughter's honor. Hans escapes the graveyard before the butcher sees him, telling you he plans to sneak up to Karolina's room and directing you to buy him some time.
The easiest way to stall the butcher is to pass all of the Speech checks. At this point, you may hear Hans and Karolina enjoying themselves if she was impressed by the poem; otherwise, you'll hear Karolina attempting to drive Hans out. Then, when the butcher finally sees through your honeyed words, start singing, and continue doing so until he's convinced you're a madman and leaves you in peace. If you give Hans enough time for a wonderful meeting with Karolina, you will earn the achievement Wingman. Other checks, such as the Charisma checks, may work as well, but if the butcher leaves early or starts fighting you before Hans is done, the young lord won't have enough time to finish his business.
Regardless of the outcome, return to Hans the next morning and ask how it went. If it went well, a glowing Hans will describe it as the best night of his life. You'll ask when he plans to see Karolina again, to which he replies: never! Such a relationship is a beautiful, temporary thing, and besides, he's a nobleman and she's the butcher's daughter. She can't even read! She returned his love letter to him, unopened, which he passes on to you with 750
. However, if his night didn't go well, he'll be upset, but there will be other wenches to pursue in the future, and he'll still give you the love letter and 525
.
If Hans was successful, when you leave Pirkstein, a cutscene will show Sir Hanush talking to the butcher on the bridge. Somehow, the latter discovered it was Hans who fornicated with his daughter, and he tries to blackmail Sir Hanush by raising the possibility of a "lasting reminder" of the encounter: a child. Sir Hanush scolds the butcher but ultimately gives him what he wants: a purse of groschen. He then exclaims he'll have Hans' balls on a platter.
Notes[]
- While listed as a side quest, if you own this DLC, this quest must be completed in order for you to complete the Epilogue to ride off with Hans and finish a playthrough. If you put it off until the Epilogue, you may ride with Hans to the camp near Neuhof, but he will start the quest once there, put his weapons and armor in the nearby chest, and ride back to Rattay. Failing the quest by killing the butcher or Karolina is the only way to finish a playthrough as an illiterate Henry, as even if you managed to progress to this point without learning to read, Hans will force you to so you can read the love poem for him. If you confess to Hans that you killed the butcher to make things easier for him, he'll call you an animal and tell you to get out of his sight until he calms down. On the other hand, killing Karolina leads to no comments.
Bugs[]
- When you reach Hans' room to pick him up in the last part of the quest, passing through the door might cause the game to enter an infinite loop. A fix that has been tested in a reddit thread is as follows: before you open the door, open the console and input the command "sys_maxFPS = 10" (without quotes). This should allow the cutscene to load, after which you can reset FPS to your desired setting.
