Bozhena is an elderly herbwoman that lives in an isolated hut in the woods west of Troskowitz with her daughter, Pavlena.
Biography[]
Bozhena used to be a midwife living in Troskowitz, helping the town's women as needed, just like her mother before her. At one point, she was assisting a young woman during labor, but who died shortly after giving birth to a baby girl. With the father not around either, Bozhena ended up taking in the baby, naming her Pavlena, and raising her as her own.
While Pavlena was really young, one fateful night Bozhena was called on by another villager, Jakesh, to assist his wife, Ludmila, who'd been in labor for several hours already. However, he had sent for assistance too late and Ludmila ended up giving birth to a stillborn baby boy before she herself died from the exhaustion. Bozhena could only helplessly stand by but Jakesh, not realizing his son had been stillborn, accused Bozhena of having damned his son for not christening him before death, and letting his wife die. He riled up the rest of the town and they drove Bozhena out of town.
Bozhena was then forced to live in isolation with her daughter in a small hut out in the forest, making due with what they could forage from the land. As Pavlena grew older, she took to making baskets to sell in town to help out, as at least the villagers didn't blame her for what happened.
Years later, two badly injured men, Hans Capon and Henry, burst into her cabin in the middle of the night. As Hans begged her to save Henry, an armed man appeared and attacked. Despite his own injuries, Hans managed to kill the thug, but was also badly wounded in the process. Acting quickly, Bozhena did her best to heal them both and managed to save them. After the two were well enough to continue traveling, they thanked Bozhena and Pavlena for saving them and their hospitality. Bozhena then gave the men some food and money as they set off for their destination.
However, there was still clear animosity from Jakesh against Bozhena and, while he never wished for Pavlena to be hurt, his drunken rants about Bozhena caused some of his hired hands to try and scare Pavlena to get at Bozhena. When Bozhena learned of this, she finally had enough of Jakesh and wished for something to be done about him as otherwise she and Pavlena would never know peace.
