Barley is a character that can be randomly encountered several times in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

When encountered, he'll offer to tell you a riddle that, if you answer correctly, he'll give a small reward, with each encounter requiring a larger and larger bet amount.

The first time, the reward depends on if you ask to check what he has on him or something more skill related. He won't say directly though which skill trait, instead making you pick between taverns or travels. Taverns will improve you drinking skill.

Subsequent times, he'll offer the monetary reward or to learn another skill, which will vary between drinking, survival, and alchemy.

Biography[]

Barley doesn't reveal much about himself, though he used to have a dog that traveled with him, who he called Wags. He had Wags since he was a puppy, having saved from otherwise being killed as he was the runt of the litter. One day while they were traveling though, wolves got to Wags and despite his best efforts, Barley wasn't able to save him. Barley buried him near Wysoka before continuing his travels, though this time alone. However, when he passes through that area, he likes to stop by there to visit Wags' grave.

2 Once upon a time there was a fool of a farmer. Family, he had none, no stable boys either, so he talked to his animals instead. And, good man that he was, whenever he made a Groschen or two, he shared it with them according to his own rules. Every hen in the coop was paid five Groschen, every bee in the hive 15, and the spider in the loft bagged a full twenty Groshen. And now you tell me, how much did the cat get? 10
3 Jaromir the coachman hailed from Raborsch. One morning, he set off for Kuttenberg with an empty coach. Three boys boarded in Bohunowitz. When he arrived in Bojscht, one of the boys got out and a washerwoman took his place. In Horschan, the washerwoman went on her way and a pedlar and his daughter boarded. In Pschitoky, the remaining lads alighted and took the pedlar's daughter with them. And straight away, two fishermen got in. And on reaching Kuttenberg that evening, they invited the coachman to the bathhouse and got pig-drunk. And now you tell me, what was the coachman's name? Jaromir
4 A bailiff has twelve men join up for service one day. The bailiff was glad, but soon discovered that he didn't have enough gear for them in the armory. So those twelve men filed onto the square for the next morning's roll call. Six of them were wearing body armor, four had helmets. Only three of them wore both a helmet and body armor. Now, tell me, how many men were unlucky enough not to have either a helmet or armor? 5

Notes[]

  • His facial hair (or lack of) tends to change each time he's met. It's unclear if this is intentional or a bug.
